NYC Announces Second Public Grocery Store Site
A New Chapter for Hunts Point
Today, Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani named The Peninsula in the Bronx as the second site for the city’s municipal grocery store program. Specifically, the 20,000-square-foot store will anchor Hunts Point and open in 2027. Notably, this Bronx location will open before the program’s first-announced site in East Harlem. New York City

In his remarks, Mamdani said working families in the Bronx have paid the price for a city that keeps getting more expensive while government looks away. The Peninsula Project
Originally, the site held the former Spofford Juvenile Detention Facility, a controversial property for decades. Today, NYCEDC is redeveloping the campus into a mixed-use hub. Moreover, the project includes 740 units of 100% affordable housing, plus more than 50,000 square feet of new public open space. Additionally, plans call for 30,000 square feet of light industrial space and over 50,000 square feet of community space. Meanwhile, Hunts Point faces severe affordability pressures every day. In fact, more than half of households have relied on public assistance within the last year. Notably, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez praised the decision and called fresh food a right, not a luxury. Similarly, State Senator Jose Serrano welcomed the news for communities battling food insecurity. Meanwhile, developer James Patchett noted that Hunts Point residents pushed for a grocery store from day one.
How the Program Works
Initially announced in April, the N.Y.C. Groceries Project taps city-owned property to lower overhead costs for shoppers. Specifically, Mayor Mamdani has allocated $70 million in capital funding to develop five grocery store sites across the five boroughs. However, the city will not run the stores directly. Soon, Deputy Mayor Julie Su will issue a request for proposals to identify qualified operators. Eventually, by 2027, South Bronx residents will gain direct access to discounted staples like bread and eggs.
