Meta and AMD Announce Blockbuster AI Chip Deal to Power Next-Gen AI Compute

Meta Platforms — the company behind Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp — has signed a major multi-year agreement with chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to dramatically expand its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, signalling a significant shift in the global AI compute landscape.

The deal, officially unveiled on February 24, 2026, calls for Meta to deploy up to 6 gigawatts of AMD’s Instinct GPUs — high-performance chips designed to handle massive AI workloads — along with advanced AMD CPUs and rack-scale systems.

What the Partnership Entails

Meta’s agreement deepens an existing collaboration with AMD and includes:

  • Up to 6 GW of AMD Instinct GPU capacity — enough processing power to support some of the largest AI models and inference tasks in the world.
  • Custom MI450-based GPU deployments, tailored to Meta’s specific AI workloads starting in the second half of 2026.
  • Integration of sixth-generation AMD EPYC CPUs and advanced rack-scale architectures co-designed with Meta.
  • A long-term roadmap alignment between Meta’s AI infrastructure goals and AMD’s silicon and systems development.

AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su described the extension of the partnership as part of “one of the industry’s largest AI deployments,” while Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the agreement supports the company’s efforts to build flexible, efficient AI compute at massive scale.

A Strategic and Financial Play

Though full financial terms were not published in the official statement, industry reporting suggests the deal could be worth tens of billions of dollars over several years, with some analyses valuing the partnership at upwards of $100 billion when factoring in compute purchases and potential stock warrants tied to performance milestones.

Under the agreement, AMD issued Meta warrants to acquire up to 160 million shares of AMD stock, potentially giving Meta up to about 10 % ownership if performance and stock price targets are met over the life of the deal.

AMD’s stock reacted positively to the announcement, rising significantly on the day of the announcement as investors cheered the expanded strategic partnership and the validation of AMD’s technology roadmap.

Why This Matters in the AI Race

This meta-AMD collaboration comes at a time when the AI infrastructure market is intensifying, and competition for high-performance chips is fierce:

  • Diversification beyond Nvidia: Meta maintains relationships with multiple chip suppliers — including Nvidia — and this AMD deal allows it to reduce reliance on any single provider while building a more versatile compute foundation.
  • Scalability for future AI models: The enormous compute capacity secured through this pact underpins Meta’s ambitions to build and deploy increasingly capable AI systems — including its vision of “personal superintelligence.”
  • Industry impact: By committing such large-scale GPU purchases to AMD, Meta positions the chipmaker as a stronger challenger to Nvidia’s long-dominant position in the AI hardware market.

What’s Next

Initial shipments under this agreement are expected in the second half of 2026, with infrastructure deployments rolling out across Meta’s global data center footprint. The collaboration also includes integration with AMD’s software systems to optimally support Meta’s vast AI workloads and applications.

For the tech industry at large, this deal marks a milestone in the evolution of AI infrastructure — one where strategic partnerships and bespoke silicon design will play a defining role in competitive advantage.
