NY Art Life: Maria Carolina, we know that you are very busy but we wanted to thank you for sharing your insights and your expertise with us today.
Maria Carolina Torres: Absolutely, I’m excited to have been recognized by this art publication! It’s an honor to share my experience with you.
NY Art Life: Great! I absolutely love your 100 Days of Sex Talk project. Can you tell us more about this?
Maria Carolina Torres: This project aimed to ambitiously challenge the discussion around sex through sophisticated design, incorporating branding and strategy techniques. As a result, it ignited lively conversations within the graphic design industry, especially after being featured in PRINT Magazine. My research was motivated by the lack of my own sexual education in my upbringing, and I’m sharing my work in both English and Spanish for anyone willing to learn and reevaluate their knowledge. The core principle of this project is firmly grounded in the belief that access to comprehensive sexual education and the ability to make informed decisions are fundamental human rights.
NY Art Life: Wow! That’s so exciting that you were profiled in PRINT MAGAZINE, the leading industry publication on graphic design and branding. Tell me your role and work within Project Body Type.
Maria Carolina Torres: Project Body Type was created by Meng Shui, former Creative Director of Thinx, the first menstrual underwear company. I am the type designer alongside Maria Farah and I was responsible for creating a typeface.
The goal of this project was to honor the human form and tell the story of a diverse group of bodies.
NY Art Life: I know that you have a strong background working with corporate clients.
Maria Carolina Torres: I have had the pleasure of working with amazing clients like Doveras, and Standard Dose, and am currently working at Act+Acre.
NY Art Life: Those are major clients! Can you tell me what corporate clients are usually looking for?
Maria Carolina Torres: Clients come to me looking for strong branding assets that reflect their values and missions and most importantly what their long-term goals are. Companies are aware of the importance of a cohesive brand identity to create trust and authenticity with their clients across all channels. For Doveras for example, I was responsible for refreshing and redefining the logo and color palette and designing all branding assets, from digital products down to social media. The Doveras brand assets are currently on their website and utilized at meetings and trade shows. They have been recognized as one of the most revolutionary FemTech companies of 2023.
NY Art Life: Tell me more about your brand campaign for Adobe.
Maria Carolina Torres: Adobe challenged us to develop a fresh, breakthrough brand campaign to put Adobe on the map in the minds of small business owners. After thorough research, surveys, and interviews, we found our target audience: the great resignation. People who quit their job to pursue their dreams and start their own businesses. The campaign “Make it with Adobe” champions the brave and empowers those who have taken the leap, knowing Adobe will always be by their side. It is a social-first campaign that highlights the stories of small business owners and connects them with others in the industry so they can grow their businesses.
NY Art Life: This is a fantastic campaign! This shows your true creative versatility in the field. I know that you are currently working for Act+Acre, the leading scalpcare brand. Tell us about your experience working in-house in the wellness and beauty space.
Maria Carolina Torres: Working at Act+Acre has been very rewarding, something I have been working towards for the entirety of my career. I am able to dive fully into pushing the brand forward in preparation for their nationwide launch at Sephora. This is a huge step for any beauty brand and with my expertise in branding and design skills, I have been able to support the brand through this next big step. I am excited to see how far we can go and to continue helping Act+Acre grow.
NY Art Life: Absolutely, you have such an interesting career. Can you give our readers some words of advice?
Maria Carolina Torres: Explore, push your limits, and break out of your comfort zone to work with all different kinds of mediums, topics, and clients. Versatility is one of the best attributes a designer can have.
NY Art Life: Thank you Carolina for staying with us and sharing your experience with our readers.
