Every stop below is reachable by public transportation, and most are less than two hours from Manhattan. We start up the Hudson, cross into New England and New Jersey, and finish on Long Island.

Dia Beacon: Giant Art in a Former Factory
Dia Beacon, a former Nabisco printing factory, is now one of the great art destinations near New York City.
Minimalist masterpieces · Beacon, New York. Just 90 minutes up the Hudson by train, Dia Beacon fills an old Nabisco box-printing factory with art too big for most museums. Here you can walk inside Richard Serra’s steel spirals, wander through Dan Flavin’s colored light and sit quietly with Agnes Martin’s pale paintings.
The building is full of daylight, and the scale is breathtaking. Plan two to three hours, then explore the cafés and antique shops on Main Street. One tip: the museum is open only Friday to Monday, so plan your day trip around a long weekend.

Storm King: Sculpture Under the Open Sky
Outdoor museum · New Windsor, New York. Storm King is 500 acres of hills, meadows and woods dotted with monumental sculpture. Mark di Suvero’s giant steel works rise against the sky, Maya Lin’s Storm King Wavefield rolls like a green ocean and Andy Goldsworthy’s stone wall snakes between the trees.
Hurry, though: the 2026 season ends on November 29, and Storm King reopens in April. In November, the fall colors make it especially beautiful, so bring good shoes and warm layers. The art center is open rain or shine.

Yale: Two Free Museums Across the Street
Always free · New Haven, Connecticut. The Yale University Art Gallery is the oldest university art museum in America, with about 200,000 objects from ancient times to today. Van Gogh’s The Night Café hangs here, alongside American masterpieces and modern art.
Right across Chapel Street, the Yale Center for British Art holds the largest collection of British art outside the United Kingdom, in Louis Kahn’s last building. Best of all, both museums are free for everyone, every day they are open. That’s two world-class museums for the price of a train ticket.

Princeton: A Brand-New Museum on Campus
New building · Princeton, New Jersey. The Princeton University Art Museum opened its new home in October 2025, designed by David Adjaye and nearly double the size of the old museum. Its nine connected pavilions are built to fight “museum fatigue,” with views onto the campus and short paths between the galleries.
The collection spans more than 117,000 works, from ancient Roman mosaics set into the floor to Rothko, Joan Mitchell and Gerhard Richter. Admission is free, as it has always been, and the museum stays open until 8 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays.

Nassau County Museum of Art: A Mansion on the Gold Coast
Gilded Age estate · Roslyn Harbor, Long Island. About 25 miles from Midtown, this museum lives in a Georgian-style mansion on the former Frick estate, surrounded by gardens, walking trails and an outdoor sculpture park. It is one of the largest suburban art museums in the country.
This season, the museum celebrates New York’s most glamorous decades with Harry Benson’s photographs and Tiffany’s paintings. Afterward, walk the free sculpture trails: the grounds are especially lovely in autumn.
How to Plan the Perfect Art Day Trip
Check the Days Before You Go
Many museums outside the city keep short weeks. Dia Beacon opens only Friday to Monday, while Yale, Princeton and the Nassau County Museum of Art close on Mondays. So match the museum to the day, not the other way around.
Let the Train Do the Work
Metro-North takes you from Grand Central to Beacon and New Haven, NJ Transit runs from Penn Station toward Princeton, and the LIRR heads out to Roslyn. Most trips are under two hours, and you can read, nap or plan your route on the way.
Go Early in Autumn and Winter
Days are short in November, and several museums close by 4 or 5 p.m. Catch a morning train, visit the museum first and save lunch for the town afterward. You’ll get better light for photos, too.
