“Through building this work, I witnessed how Chinatown pulses with transformation, yet remains anchored by an unshakeable foundation of community,” Phingbodhipakkiya explains. Her art honors the tenacity of residents who have weathered gentrification, economic downturns, and a global pandemic. This resilience is seen in the seafood vendors who stayed open for elderly patrons during the lockdown and in the community’s efforts to rebuild after devastating fires.

Running concurrently with Phingbodhipakkiya’s work, Christina Young’s contribution to the exhibit will be on display from January 21 through April 20 at Pearl River Mart. Additionally, her posters showcase thirty iconic locations across Chinatown, including beloved spots like Doyers Street and Wing On Wo & Co. “It’s unfortunate that many places from our childhood were forced to close during the pandemic,” Young reflects. “But it’s important to remember that the city is constantly evolving, and the spirit of Chinatown remains strong.” This interactive component not only highlights the neighborhood’s richness but also invites everyone to take part in its ongoing story.
