New York Art Life: Cheryl, as a Brand Marketing Strategist specializing in social media management at Wukong Media NASC, it is truly inspiring to know your achievements about follower-building at RedNote! What strategies did you implement for follower growth quickly on the site? Also, how do you measure effectiveness?

Cheryl Yu: Thank you! I developed and maintained a marketing matrix with multiple accounts on RedNote. Sometimes, it’s overwhelming but worth having. I currently handle five accounts. It’s a cross-channel strategy where, besides creating engaging content, target ads are built. Also, relationships with micro-influencers are nurtured to go deep into the demographics and tastes of their followers while making content based on such analysis. And then the results blew my mind. I have successfully grown accounts from zero to over 30K+ followers in under a year. Also, I grew our WeChat video account to 100,000 followers, which is just incredible! I make sure to continuously develop strategies that directly increase engagement and exposure. T

o see the type of growth I made was so rewarding and really fed into my passion for the work that I do. I put my heart into the measurement of each strategy’s effectiveness through engagement, follower growth, and conversion metrics. This allows me to continuously refine our approach since we were in touch with our audience. It gets better every time. That is really fulfilling to know. My effort is put into building a vibrant community around brands. And I am excited to see where my journey is headed next!

New York Art Life: You did an excellent job in promoting the NY Mid-Autumn Festival Cruise of 2024. It must have involved some essential influencer collaborations. What are some of the specific strategies you’ve used to collaborate with influencers in promoting NY Mid-Autumn Festival Cruise?

Cheryl Yu: For the NY Mid-Autumn Festival Cruise, I dove deep into the selection of influencers whose values would align with our brand ethos. I had to find such people who would understand the cultural essence of this event and appreciate it and I made sure to write personalized outreach messages to each. I highlighted unique experiences we were offering, pointing at the beauty and richness of the celebration. It helped me a lot in building genuine relationships with the influencers.

Building up the relationships was extremely pleasing! All we needed to do was urge them to share the buzz of this event. Doing so widened our reach and gave them a chance to connect with their audience on another level. It was surreal how these genuine voices brought our vision into life! The buzz truly captured the spirit of Mid-Autumn. Knowing it had helped bring about a feeling of community and joy made it even more worth the while.

New York Art Life: Cheryl, your achievement of driving sales on TikTok Shop is amazing! What creative marketing strategies do you use to increase the GMV at TikTok Shop from 0 to $30,000?

Cheryl Yu: Aw, thank you. I did a lot of creative marketing activities like flash sales, and time-sensitive promotions where consumers will have an exhilarating feeling due to urgency. It is exciting to witness how such a technique triggered the interest and drove immediate actions of consumers. Then, I leveraged unique features offered by TikTok, such as short-form videos and trending challenges, to portray our products in an energetic, catchy format.

Creating content not only showcased our offerings but also resonated with the dynamic culture of TikTok. It felt very rewarding. But what makes it even special is the kind of community feeling that it evoked among all of our followers. As they create content around it, and even participate in the challenges, the connection has been so amazing. The thought that through our efforts, we were bringing people together, letting them be part of something greater, and actually making their day is something that I don’t take for granted.

New York Art Life: Authenticity is fundamental to influencer marketing. How do you balance the authentic versus the promotional in trying to reach an audience?

Cheryl Yu: I like to balance authenticity with promotional content with much care and passion. I try to make my content relatable. I usually intertwine my life experiences into creating content. In that line, I keep integrating subtle brand mentions right within the real storylines so I don’t lose my audience’s trust. Most of all, I’m only promoting brands that I really believe in. It’s been a big plus from my followers, who like all that realness and the connections we can build based on our experiences. It’s fulfilling knowing that my approach resonates with them. I like to believe that it enables a deeper relationship where honest storytelling and brand promotion harmonize perfectly.

New York Art Life: Cheryl, that’s quite an achievement to have grown Kimber Health’s social media presence! What exactly do you think you’ve done to grow the number of Kimber Health’s social media account followers by 400%?

Cheryl Yu: Thank you! I implemented a multi-content approach-bundled engaging visuals, informative posts, and interactive elements-including polls and Q&A sessions. It’s about creating value for a wider audience and a very active community through high-quality content and targeted advertising. Influencer collaborations in the health and wellness space have also helped expand our reach. We appreciate getting noticed by people who are like-minded, and interested in the same passion. It was very rewarding to be able to witness this growth since it showed not just the potential of the brand but also a connection with others in the health and wellness community.

New York Art Life: It is tough to get sponsorships, and so we look up to you for always succeeding! From your experience, what do you think were the reasons for your success in securing the sponsorship from ‘One To World’ related to the Twilight Cruise event?

Cheryl Yu: My success in securing the sponsorship was based on thorough research and deep understanding of One To World’s goals and values. I drafted a compelling proposal that would show how their brand visibility could be increased at the event by building community. Building a real relationship with them strengthened this partnership. That’s an important aspect. You have to show the much-needed spirit needed for successful partnerships. It was amazingly satisfactory to witness this dream realized. I’m grateful for our mutually beneficial relationship.

New York Art Life: Finally, how was managing a cross-border e-commerce personal beauty makeup studio like? What are the challenges you faced with the management of the group?

Cheryl Yu: Managing a diverse team while supervising and overseeing three warehouses, two managers, 15 employees, and 45 distributors presented challenges in communication and coordination. To address this, I implemented regular check-ins and utilized collaborative tools for real-time updates and feedback. That’s how I was able to handle it. The inclusive environment allowed team members to feel valued and heard. This in turn led to enhanced collaboration and productivity. In particular, our work dealt with $2 million in annual sales and my outstanding negotiation skills, which allowed me to obtain more than 15 authorization certificates from Korean brands for very profitable cross-border import contracts.

I was on cloud nine! Besides, I managed to minimize the decline in sales during the pandemic: instead of 30% every month, it was only 16%. It was really great to witness the team come together through these challenges. It brought a lot of unity and a sense of purpose for us.

New York Art Life: The qualities of a social media manager sets up success. What are five essential qualities that a social media manager should have, and how do you embody those qualities in your work?

Cheryl Yu: As a social media manager, five qualities I believe have led to my success are creativity, analytical thinking, being adaptable, excellent communication skills, and keeping a customer-centric focus. I exemplify these traits by continuously coming up with new concepts for our campaigns and examining data related to strategies. The flexibility to adapt to market trends ensures we stay on point. While over everything else, clear communication with both my team and my clients assists in having an effective teamwork and transparency relationship. Also, I always take into account the needs and preferences of our target audience to ensure that what we do is really effective. This holistic approach not only strengthens our campaigns but also our relationships, which, in turn, will have a positive impact on our overall success. That’s the recipe.

The fact that Cheryl Yu has had such a successful brand marketing strategist  specializing in a social media management career is quite a testament of the transformative power of creativity, data-driven insights, and authentic connections in today’s competitive landscape. She has been able to effectively manage diverse teams, getting engagement through innovative campaigns and truly great relationships with influencers, bringing out the most crucial qualities in a well-performing social media manager.
