What to do in NYC today? The Costume Institute at the MET

Check out the Costume Institute in the extraordinary city of New York.

One of the most visited museums in New York City is The Metropolitan Museum of Art. With over thousands of years of history, the museum invites patrons, members, and guests to visit its new exhibitions every season. There are many wings and halls of the museum, and lately, there have been incredible shows with costumes and designer outfits.

This year, there were two exhibitions in the Costume Institute: In America: A Lexicon of Fashion and An Anthology of Fashion. The exhibitions portrayed two very different collections of costumes. One displays going back to the eras of classical and romantic costumes, placed in vintage décor and setting. Another includes a more modern room of vibrant costumes garmenting mannequins at war. This room represents the civil war.

Meanwhile, In America: A Lexicon of Fashion uses common terminology to describe how each garment is supposed to feel. It exhibits what emotion it gives to the person either looking at the ensemble or wearing it. There are also beautifully composed soundtracks playing in each exhibition, which complement the delicate yet powerfully curated shows. There is also a new show Kimono Style: The John C Weber Collection highlighting the T-shaped garment and its influence on modern style.
